Why You Shouldnt Necessarily Go for That Promotion

Why You Shouldnt Necessarily Go for That PromotionWhy You Shouldnt Necessarily Go for That PromotionGetting a promotion is one of the holy grails of modern careers. Its the post-college report card. It gives employees a goal and reason to work harder. It confers prestige and respect. It comes with more responsibility- and more money. But pursuing promotions has its negative effects as well. In fact, there are enough downsides that you should consider not pursuing them at all. Here are three reasons why you shouldnt pursue a promotion- and how you can keep moving your career forward anyway.1. Promotions Arent Within Your ControlCompanies offer promotions to employees in order to get them to work harder. They cant advance everybody, but that doesnt matter. The promise of a raise and a more prestigious title will get everyone to work harder (in theory), even if they only have the funds to promote a few people. Its not a sadistic productivity plot conceived by the senior staff- its just th e way it is. Not everyone can be a VP.What this means for you is that receiving a promotion is not totally within your control. It is within your influence, certainly. You can make sure your work is top-notch, show up more than your peers, play the office politics game, and do whatever else it takes. But ultimately, your ability to get a promotion is restricted by the supply of open positions and someone elses opinion. And if you dont receive the promotion, you will be disappointed. You will have expended a ton of energy that could have been spent on something more worthwhile, something within your control. What You Should Do InsteadDont do things just to get a promotion. Instead, focus on the positive, career-building activities that you can control. Develop your professional relationships. Develop your skills. Be a good friend and co-worker. Though these sound like things youd do to get a promotion, the difference is in your mindset. You will find these activities are inherently rew arding, and more importantly, within your control. If those things happen to lead to a promotion, great If not, youre still better off professionally and psychologically. 2. Pursuing Promotions Decreases Your MotivationIn 1973, psychologists Mark Lepper and David Greene wanted to test the effects of rewards on motivation. They selected 3-5 year olds who were interested in drawing and randomly assigned them to three groups. The children in group A were told they would receive a certificate if they pspeciesicipate in the drawing activity the children in group B would receive a reward for participating, but they werent told about it, so it was a surprise and the children in group C did not receive any rewards for participating. They were then invited into a separate room and were asked to draw over a six-minute period.Guess which group spent the least amount of time drawing? Group A, the children who were told they would receive a reward. Most companies put their employees in group A. They rely on external rewards to motivate employees, the most significant being the promise of a promotion. Once you start doing things for the rewards, however, your motivation and enjoyment of the work will decrease. Meaning, you will be less productive and less inclined to put time and energy into building the skills you need to be successful in the long term.Paradoxically, pursuing promotions may actually make you less qualified to receive oneWhat You Should Do InsteadInstead of focusing on external rewards for your work, focus on genuinely enjoying the work you do. Figure out what youre good at, what you like to do, and what work feels meaningful to you. If its not what youre currently doing, think about whether you can pick up projects that excite you more, or whether a career change is in order. If you love what youre currently doing, think of ways you can do more of it or become better at it. If you are a writer, focus on becoming a better writer. If you are a consultant, pe rfect the delicate art of client management. If you are a data analyst, become an Excel and database whiz. Find something that seems interesting, and master it. Focus your efforts on actively enjoying the work you do and developing your craft, not on that shiny new job title. If you get skipped over for a promotion, youll still be more valuable in the marketplace and- more importantly- youll be actually excited about the work you do.3. You May Have to Change Yourself to Get a PromotionI had my mid-year review the other week. My manager told that me that while my work is good, I need to develop more political savvy. This means I need to learn what my colleagues interests are, be less blunt in my emails, and learn how to not step on peoples toes. The problem is, I have no interest in becoming politically savvy. Those challenge areas my boss described to me are character traits I value. I like being blunt and to the point. I like that I dont spend all my time thinking about how someone will perceive my ideas. Its my nature to be this way. In order to win a promotion, however, I will have to become politically savvy.Pursuing a promotion can sometimes force you to work against your nature. If youre a creative type but your company is inherently conservative, you will have to learn to keep your crazy ideas to yourself. Or, if you work best alone and your company is all about collaboration, youre going to have to dive headfirst into teamwork, despite your natural inclinations. What You Should Do InsteadInstead of forcing yourself into the mold of what your company wants, really think about whether this is the place for you long-term. Do you really want to change yourself to get promoted within your company? Or are there other places and companies where you could advance your career while staying true to who you are, what you believe in, and your working style? It might make sense to see where other people like you have been successful, and consider the alternatives out there. If you change yourself in order to move up the ladder, its unlikely youll feel great about the success. But if you find a workplace where the things that make you unique are desired- and even rewarded? Theres a good chance youll ultimately get promoted there anyway, and youll be happier with your work.Remember, giving up the pursuit of promotions doesnt mean you wont have a successful career. By focusing on things other than promotions, you will have a more satisfying, interesting, and happy career. Photo of fish courtesy of Shutterstock.

There are two distinct career paths in the military Commissioned Officers and Enlisted. The pay scales for each reflect their different degrees of responsibility. Each military service has its own names for the various enlisted ranks (Navy and Coast Guard are the same). Most enlisted members enter the military at the lowest pay grade (E-1) and climb the pay scale to higher positions with greater pay. Enlisted pay grades range from E-1 through E-9 (E represents Enlisted). To gain the pay advantages of a Commissioned Off icer, some enter the military with a higher education degree and begin their military careers through one of the Officer Candidate Schools some are high school graduates who attend a service academy or a civilian college while participating in an ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program.Military members receive a monthly base pay which is based on their rank and time in service. How Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your Attention

How Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your AttentionHow Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your AttentionLying, its one of the things were taught never to do (unless were saving someones feelings). After a few weeks in an ad agency, people are being rewarded for it. OK, its not lying in the traditional sense of the word. But there are many different ways to lie, and professional advertisers know them all too well. Type of Lies Omission This is perhaps the most common type of lie in advertising. Simply put, its taking relevant information off the table so that only the best features of the product or service are highlighted. So for example, if you have a diet pill that will help you lose 50lbs in 10 weeks, but it must be combined with furious exercise and a low-calorie diet to work, the lie of omission would be leaving the diet and exercise facts on the cutting room floor.Commission An out and out lie, such as buy this CD, and you will make $1 million in under a year is very rare in advertising. T hey are easy to spot, and also hard to defend. Error A case in point here is the infamous Sketchers Shape Ups campaigns that launched the shoe. The ad agency was led to believe that this show could help you lose weight and stay in shape, and so they ran with it. That was an error. There was no malice meant, but it was still a deception.Exaggeration Also very common in advertising, although exaggeration is used so blatantly that very few people believe what the advertiser is saying. Obviously, spraying on some deodorant is not going to have women running after you from miles around. Its taking things to the extreme to make a point. Thus, harmless fun. Denial This is dangerous. Refusing to believe anything negative about the product or service being advertised, and leaving it out of every communication. For the longest time, the tobacco industry refused to admit that its products were harmful. Even doctors were hawking them.MinimizationIn other words, the opposite of exaggerating the benefit you play down the negative aspects. So, this product may cause slight discomfort when the product is known to cause major pain and suffering, thats a lie of minimization. Reinvention If the story doesnt fit, change the story. This can be done in many ways, from the use of sarcasm and tone to rearranging facts and quotes to benefit the product or service being told. Examples of Common Lies Used in Advertising You will see bad ads from worse agencies, and they will outright lie or aim to mislead in the most tricky ways possible. Some places walk a fine line between legal and illegal, using every loophole in the law to avoid prosecution. These are the ads that feature copywriting atrocities like Compare at $100 - That does not mean the product is worth $100 it means that you should compare the product youre about to buy with one that costs $100. Thats often like comparing a Cubic Zirconia ring with a diamond ring. Yes, theyre almost the same, but come on. Similarly, that $5 9 generic tablet I not one that can be honestly compared to an iPad, but these lies often existCall in the next 10 minutes - And what happens? You get free shipping? You get your buchung doubles at no extra charge? You get a free pony? It doesnt matter, the time is irrelevant. You get those deals no matter what. It is simply a way to get people racing to the phone. But they dont say if you dont call in the next ten minutes you wont get it. Its blatant deception to make you think your quick response gets you something other lazier people wont get. Pay NOTHING For Covered Services. Oooh, more tricky language. That phrase means nothing. Nothing at all. But it sounds like it means everything. Its like saying pay nothing to breathe the air in your backyard. Well, duh. If a service is covered, its paid for. See. So, those are the kinds of lies that advertisers will tell. They are not breaking any laws they are just messing with language. But out and out lies, they are disproven quickly an d will result in some very bad karma for the brand. Imagine if brands said things like Guaranteed to make you 25 IQ points higher. Our bacon cheeseburgers are 100% fat and calorie free.Well be there in 29 seconds or less, every time. That just leaves advertisers wide open for lawsuits and dismayed customers. Anything that blatantly false will be discovered, and through word of mouth the brand will be ripped apart. Advertising does bend the truth, but usually, its so exaggerated that no one ever believes it to be anything other than entertainment to raise attention. From talking crocodiles to cars driving on the ceiling, its simply ?razzle-dazzle to get you to customers to pay attention.

Why Election Day Should Be a Paid Day Off

Why Election Day Should Be a Paid Day OffWhy Election Day Should Be a Paid Day OffFour score and a bunch of years ago, the U.S. was an agrarian society (full of farmers) and so it made sense that Election Day would fall on a Tuesday in early November. The thinking back in the 1800s was November fell after the harvest and before the harsh cold of winter, and Tuesday gave farmers enough fair-weather travel time to get to their nearest voting booths via horse-drawn carriage they couldnt/wouldnt travel on the Sabbath and some needed nearly two days to carriage to the booths. Now, of course, things are a bit different. Weve gone from agrarian to manufacturing to postindustrial to information society. We have something called the car as well as not-too-terrible public transportation systems. And millions of us have bosses and companies and shareholders that demand nearly all of our time on the first (and second and third and fourth) Tuesday In November. All of which is why many companies, or ganizations, and individuals, including certain Presidents of the United States named Barack and former presidential candidates named Bernie, believeElection Day should be a national holiday and thus a paid day off. Some (though surely not Barack and Bernie) also argue that national holidays like Presidents Day and Columbus Day and New Years Day seem like dubious holy days at best, and could very well be replaced by an Election Day holiday on which we actually have to do something- that is, vote. Proponents of Election Day as a national holiday say making it easier to vote will increase voter turnout, thus improving the democratic process. And its hard to argue against that.Speaking of which, one company making a rather loud argument about turning Election Day into a paid day off is Casper, the friendly mattress startup (which is also killing it, having become a company worth half a billion dollars in just two years, and so Id recommend listening closely to what it has to say). Its ha rd to get out and vote, said Neil Parikh, the co-founder of Casper, which will close its two retail stores and offices in the U.S., giving roughly 180 of its 200 global employees the day off. Everything that you can do to make someones life a little bit easier so they can contribute is worth it.Mr. Parikh said Casper executives ran back-of-the-envelope numbers to estimate how much sales could drop without employees on hand to answer customer questions. Normally, customers can access live help via text, phone and online chat seven days a week. The company will ask some engineers and customer-service representatives to be on call on Nov. 8.A startup that identifies itself as a tech company, New York City-based Casper considers the voting holiday a workplace perk, a natural next step after free meals and generous benefits, Mr. Parikh said.Another retailer giving its staff mora time to rock the vote is konservativer Burch. And although Burch isnt giving employees a full day off, the fir m is generously offering several hours of paid leave for employees to get their preppy butnon-obnoxiousselves out to the polling stations.Tory Burch, the co-CEO of a retail business bearing her name, has been outspoken about employers giving workers time off to vote, writing in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that the countrys voter turnout rates are embarrassing and dangerous. Ms. Burchs nearly 3,000 person firm will give its U.S. corporate employees four paid hours off, and store employees up to two paid hours off on Nov. 8.On the other side of the argument, opponents of the idea of giving employees the day off on Election Day say already citizens can vote well in advance of Election Day, already the polling stations are open before and after normal working hours, and already many employers allow employees a little leeway to come in late or leave early on Election Day to cast their votes. However, what these benefits dont promote is employees getting more involved in the electi on process. That is, a couple hours here and there on Election Day doesnt allow employees, in plus-rechnen to casting their votes, to volunteer their time, say, helping out at a polling station, or helping those vote who have a hard time getting to a polling station, or helping in some other way on one of the most important days in a democratic societys calendar year.Speaking of which, heres the editor-in-chief of the Northwestern University Law Review in a CNBC.com op-ed that was published this past spring.Northwestern Law has cancelled all classes on Election Day, not only to encourage students and faculty to cast their ballots but also to connect them with volunteer organizations throughout Chicago, groups that work tirelessly to ensure that the election is free and fair. More than seven hundred lawyers and lawyers-in-training will be freed from one days work to leave their mark on the 2016 election. Northwestern Law students and faculty will be an active part of our democratic p rocess, not just ivory tower observers or participants of convenience.Other colleges and universities, especially law schools, in Chicago and nationwide should follow and end the absurd hypocrisy of researching and dissecting the law and championing the importance of democracy while forcing students and faculty to sit on the sidelines on the most important day of the year.Another idea, if we cant agree on giving employees the day off, is to move Election Day to the weekend. And why not, as many have proposed, have it fall over two days, over a Saturday and a Sunday. This would allow more time to vote, wouldnt interfere with most employees workweeks, and would seem to follow the voting format that a majority of the Western world now follows. In any case, it seems clear that sticking to Election Day on a Tuesday just because thats the way weve been doing things for years and yearsis very last-century thinking. An update, an Election Day 2.0, is long overdue.Follow meTwitter.Follow Vaul t onInstagram.

Want to Improve Your Diversity Hiring Look At Your Process Through Candidates Eyes

Want to Improve Your Diversity Hiring Look At Your Process Through Candidates EyesThis year, many organizations have upped their game to find and hire more diverse talent. Youve probably reached out to new candidate sources or posted job ads on a wider variety of websites. But chances are, youre totenstill not seeing the results you want in regards to your diversity hiring initiative. In fact, the 2018 Global Recruiting Trends report from LinkedIn found that 38 percent of companies are still having trouble finding diverse candidates. An additional 14 percent find it difficult to get these job seekers to move past the interview process. This is because diversity hiring isnt just about finding great candidates from a variety of backgrounds. Its about showing theres a distributions-mix for them at your company. It doesnt matter how many diverse job seekers you reach if they dont think theyll be accepted in your organization. To truly improve diversity hiring, you need to reexamine your hir ing process. By looking at it through the eyes of a diverse candidate, you can see where there are issues that are disengaging these job seekers. Here are three factors to reconsiderBeing inflexible with interview schedulingThere are many types of candidate diversity far more than race, gender, and sexual orientation. Youre looking for candidates who have different backgrounds and experiences that will improve your organization. Chances are these candidates dont have a schedule like yours.Diverse candidates might be single parents. They could be the primary caretaker for an elderly relative. Their current job might mean they work long hours or an inconsistent schedule. So even if you find a great candidate, sending them only one or two options for an interview that thema within your business hours could be an issue. Without realizing it, youre excluding them from moving forward in the hiring process.By using one-way digital interviews, however, there are no constraints from conflic ting schedules. If its the only time available, candidates can record their responses at four in the morning. Then you could review their interview during your normal workday. Candidates will see youve taken their unique needs into consideration making them more likely to continue in the hiring process. To improve your companys diversity, every candidate needs an equal opportunity to interview. diversityhiringClick To TweetHaving a non-diverse hiring teamDiverse candidates want to know they have a chance to succeed with an organization. They need to know there are paths in place to help them get where they want to be professionally. If every employee they meet during the hiring process is a white male manager, it will cause doubts about your true dedication to diversity.Create a diversity hiring team of volunteer employees who want to help with this mission. These employees should come from every level of the organization and be willing to talk honestly about their employee experienc e.Then get the teams feedback about the hiring process. See if there were certain steps or signs that made them worry about the organizations diversity. For instance, you might not notice in your panel interviews, all the interviewers are caucasian or all the employee testimonials on your career site are from men. These insights will show you how you can incorporate the diversity team into the hiring process. Not asking follow-up questionsOne of the biggest advantages of a diverse workforce is bringing in new ideas. A team can work on a aufgabe for weeks with no progress. But then, bringing in a different set of eyes leads to the perfect solution. Because diverse candidates often have a new way of looking at things, you need to adapt your interview process. Many hiring professionals ask the same interview questions year after year. Youve learned what responses are a sign of a good candidate. Why and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch Fresh

Why and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch FreshWhy and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch FreshWhen you were fresh out of college looking to break into the financial world, you probably heard about developing an elevator pitch - a succinct explanation of who you are, what you do and where youre headed. The trick is to present yourself within 30 to 60 seconds in such an engaging fashion that your audience is completely sold on you and offers you that dream job.Having worked successfully in the world of accounting and finance for a while now, you might think that your need for an elevator pitch has come and gone. Think again. As secure as you may feel in your current position, you never know when you might encounter the chance of a lifetime. Whats more, youll never hear about that chance if you dont have a quick way to let new contacts know about you. Having an updated, engaging elevator pitch at the ready is the perfect way to take advantage of an encounter that could lead to a new and ex citing opportunity.Getting it all in thereYour experience is what makes you more valuable, but its hard to boil it all down to an elevator pitch. Updating your resume is great way to start, but you need to condense the information even further. Narrow your experience down to a short, bulleted list of accomplishments. But dont stop there. Focus on how your experience and skill set benefits your employer now and where you want that experience to take you in the future. Skip the jargonYour financial acumen makes you attractive to a wide sortiment of potential employers, so dont block them out by using industry-specific jargon or buzzwords in your pitch. Because youre experienced in your field, you might not even notice youre throwing around these insider terms. Test your pitch out on friends from other fields to see if your words trip them up.Face-to-face interactionIf your financial experience has been in the back office, you might need to brush up on your one-to-one conversation skil ls. The last thing you want is to fumble through your pitch when the 30-second moment of truth comes your way. Practice with friends or even video your pitch. And then get out for some networkingKeep up with the latestOnce youve caught someones interest, he or she might want to discuss areas outside of accounting and finance. If you ordinarily just scan industry news sources to the exclusion of other business topics, try broadening your scope. If you know youll be in a specific social setting, you might familiarize yourself with appropriate topics beforehand.Be prepared for the end gameHave a game plan for how you want to exchange contact information if you meet someone youd like to stay in touch with. Some people prefer business cards, so make sure you have one. Others like to exchange information electronically be ready for that scenario too. Also, if you have an online portfolio of work, make sure its updated and readily accessible on your tablet. Its another way to keep your ele vator pitch fresh.Ready to try out your elevator pitch in the job market?SEARCH CONSULTING JOBS

10 Horrible Boss Stories You Wont Believe Are True

10 Horrible Boss Stories You Won’t Believe Are True 10 Horrible Boss Stories You Won’t Believe Are True Most of the bosses I’ve known are reasonably fair-minded. Not perfect, of course, but definitely with their hearts in the right place. Some bosses, however, have a real mean streak that makes their employees miserable. A while back, I co-hosted a radio program called “Funny Business.” We asked our listeners to tell us their “mean boss” stories. Here are the 10 that stood out. 1. Be Sure to Get Refundable Tickets After I got engaged, I went to my boss to schedule time off for the wedding and honeymoon, which were still more than a year away. My boss said: “I don’t know if that’s a good time for you to take vacation days. We’ll just have to wait and see.” 2. Get Your Priorities Straight My son was born very premature, the weekend before a big meeting for which I had been helping my boss prepare. On Monday, I came to work to tie up a few loose items, and to tell my boss about my son, who at that point was in the ICU. Looking up from his screen, my boss said: “Don’t let your personal life interfere with your job. It can only hurt you professionally.” 3. Neatness Counts I recently wrote a justification to buy a new PC. It had to be approved by my boss. Unhappy with my writing style, my boss rewrote the justification to show me how it should be done. After it was finally written properly, he turned it down. 4. I Love Rock and Roll I was refused a raise by my boss, who said, “You’re already making more money than I was at your age.” It turns out that he spent his youth touring around the state playing guitar in a garage band, barely making enough to pay for food and gasoline. When I pointed out that, rather than playing guitar, I had spent my youth getting a college degree and working in a high-tech job, he replied, “What’s your point?” 5. A Little Extra Motivation My doctor advised me to lose a few pounds and get more exercise. After I mentioned this to my boss, he emailed me a “motivational” image of a fashion model babe with my face and hair. A month later, when I gave notice, he emailed me the image of a pig with my face on it. 6. Did I Forget to Mention? On Monday, my boss approached me at 4 PM with an emergency assignment. He had an important meeting early the following morning and needed a new version of a 400-page document. I worked all night, made the updates, and left the manual on his desk well after midnight. When I came to work the next morning, I asked his admin about the emergency meeting. She said: “He canceled it and took a vacation day.” 7. Exercise Is Good For You Our boss asked me and my colleagues to spend two weeks preparing detailed building and capital improvement “wish lists” to plan our facility’s budget. When I asked when we might see the improvements, our boss said, “Oh- your wish lists are just that. Don’t expect anything you requested to actually get done. It was just an exercise!” 8. Don’t Ask Our boss concluded a quarterly all-employee meetings by asking if there were any questions. Silence. He said, “I keep holding these meetings, and no one asks any questions. I would like someone to ask a question.” One brave soul raised his hand and asked a question. The boss said, “Well, if you had been listening to what I just said, you would know the answer to your question. Next question.” 9. Ah! Now I Understand Our company was running into financial difficulties so my boss asked me to work for half of my salary. I said, “Well, since I’m paid for 40 hours a week but working 80, I suppose I could work 40 hours a week and only get paid for only 20 of them.” He said: “That’s not what I meant. I want you to work 80 hours a week, but I’m only going to pay you for 20 of them.” 10. Please Prioritize My grandmother unexpectedly died from heart failure and I took off two days to go to her funeral. The day I got back, my mother called me to say my grandfather had died of grief. Obviously upset, I approached my boss and explained the situation. She said: “Unfortunately, you have no bereavement time left. You should have planned better.” Readers: Can you top any of these stories? Leave a comment! Raspberry Pis Eben Upton on Design and Innovation

Raspberry Pis Eben Upton on Design and Innovation Raspberry Pis Eben Upton on Design and Innovation Raspberry Pi̢۪s Eben Upton on Design and Innovation Eben Upton, a Ph.D in computer science, started working on the Raspberry Pi in 2006, and the first $25 device was an instant hit on release in 2012. The board computer, which has reached 21 million units in shipments, has since reinvigorated the maker subculture, spawning drones, robots, industrial automation systems, and even whimsical artistic devices. Upton is the author of several books, has won a handful of awards, and in 2016 was honored as the Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Upton, 40, grew up in the United Kingdom. What led to the creation of Raspberry Pi? I grew up surrounded by computers. The first computer I ever touched was a Commodore 64, I had a Timex machine briefly, and then I had a machine called the BBC Micro, which was an educational computer, and then I had a Commodore Amiga. Those were all very programmable computers. When I went to college, I was surrounded by people who had that experience of learning computers and that was great for us. In enough time, those machines disappeared and were replaced by large PCs and unprogrammable computers like game consoles. We founded Raspberry Pi as a way of rebooting a little bit of that enthusiasm and being imaginative. The original ambition was to create a low-cost, programmable, fun hardware that was trying to fill that gap that had been vacated when Commodore 64 and other stuff had disappeared. We benefitted from the existence of programmable computers for kids, and those computers went away, and we started to suffer in the university, as an industry and a country. We thought if w e made a programmable computer for kids, we could get back some of what we lost. Optimized components are the key to Raspberry Pis product design and business model. How did you turn Raspberry Pi from an idea into a product? Raspberry Pi is a cost-engineered product. We had a sale price in mind, which was $25, and it was designed backwards from that price. A lot of products are designed forward from a feature set to a price, or maybe you have a vague idea of the price and feature set and try to make it reach in the middle. For us, it had to be a computer, and we had this idea of, What can you do with $25? The bill of materials is dominated by a small number of components: the processor, the memory, and the PCB and substrate it sits on. That accounts for about three-fourths of the bill of materials and 60 percent of the overall end product. The original Raspberry Pi had about 200 components and the current Raspberry Pi has about 300 components. Obviously, optimizing those was very important. We made big choices about what the device could do. We leveraged a standard software stack, we didnt have to do everything from scratch. We chose very carefully to give us the functionality at the price. You look at b ig things and make macro-level decisions on what your device is going to do. We got comfortable with the macro-costs involved;then theres the micro-optimization. We were nearly killed by the micro-costs, you forget the ten-cent prices. You have to make some non-functional compromises in your design. Youre squeezing out things that matter a bit less. For You: Making the 3D Skin Printer Portable How did you find a manufacturer for Raspberry Pi? We didnt find anywhere in the U.K. to manufacture Raspberry Pi a reasonable cost, but we were very lucky to get an introduction to a very good Chinese manufacturer who we used for the first two years. He took a chance on us, gave us a 2,000-unit minimum order at a decent cost compared to a U.K. manufacturer. He did millions in volumes for us over the next two years. We were in the end able to find a U.K. manufacturer and reshore almost all the manufacturing for our core products. As an entrepreneur, what lessons did you take away from the process of engineering Raspberry Pi? Theres an attention to detail in hardware. There are no prizes for shipping a defective product. The silicon industry is like that. You cant patch a chip. If you screwed up, thats going to be a lot of money going down the drain, and if you sell broken hardware, people get upset. What has the impact of Raspberry Pi been so far? I think were just getting started. If you make something which works for most customers, then you have something that will work for most companies as well. People find uses for things, and the impact has been very broad. It shouldnt have been a surprise. Outside of schools, whats the impact of Raspberry Pi? The general-purpose computer has been a success as a product and Raspberry Pi has proven to be a powerful tool not just for students, but for anyone who wants to do general automation of tasks. Weve discovered theres a lot more automatable work than we realize. People have been using PCs to automate factories, but the full unit cost has held it back. If you make something that is cheaper, lower power and has a convenient form factor, you can use it natively. The one thing that surprises us is few people know Raspberry Pi. The use of Raspberry Pi has expanded to drones and robots. Where do you expect it to go? In the context of Industry 4.0, Raspberry Pi is enabling new forms of automation by bringing high-performance, stable, robust general-purpose computing to lower price points. Engineers have used the product to automate a wide range of tasks, and as the core of their own products, including robots and drones. People using Raspberry Pi for general factory automation are also building platforms around it. People are buying Raspberry Pi as part of pre-integrated industrial solutions. Speaking of robots and drones, where do you expect Raspberry Pi to go? The drone thing is very interesting the Raspberry Pi is very good at imaging, processing data from cameras. Pretty fascinating to me recently has been use for intelligent agriculture in California, which is in the middle of a massive drought. You can do infrared photography which will allow you to identify in a field which plants need irrigation. Thats a much more efficient use of water and human time. Were discovering new themes that are automatable. I like the whimsical ones there are a lot of art installations using Raspberry Pi as a controller. People are using Raspberry Pi for vision capabilities in robotics. Raspberry Pi reinvigorated the maker subculture. What benefits do engineers get from being a maker? Engineering is a creative discipline, but engineering has an image problem. The reputation problem is simply that engineering is sometimes viewed as an uncreative, low-status profession like an engineer being the person who fixes your boiler. By emphasizing the creative, entrepreneurial aspects of engineering practice, making may help to address this. Whats your advice to engineers? Dont ask for permission. I didnt ask for permission to do Raspberry Pi, I just did it. I never regressed after that. Persist because innovations hard. I started developing Raspberry Pi in 2006, and I didnt come out with the first one which was any good until 2010 and didnt allow it to market until 2012. There was a lot of persistence across Raspberry Pi. Even when you do the right thing, things always take twice as long than you expect it to. Surround yourself with people who help you persist in your professional and personal life. I kept doing Raspberry Pi because my wife felt it was a good idea. For a time, I thought it wasnt a good idea. Listent to ASME TechCast: In our first episode, engineer Roma Agrawal talks about her new book and the need for a diversified workforce. For Further Discussion Dont ask for permission. I didnt ask for permission to do Raspberry Pi, I just did it.Eben Upton

12 Things Successful People Do Each Morning

12 Things Successful People Do Each Morning 12 Things Successful People Do Each Morning 12 Things Successful People Do Each Morning Looking to shake up your routine? Check out the things successful people do in the morning. Close your eyes for a few seconds. No, don't fall asleep. Instead, think back to this morning. How many times did you tap snooze? Were you running late? Did you feel stressed? If you're like the average American, you probably answered yes to at least one of these questions. You also probably recognize that, though it's easy to fall into this pattern, it's not the most proactive way to start your day. Instead of falling into a bad morning routine, take some advice from the pros. Here are the 12 morning habits of successful people. 1. They ditch the alarm clock Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos swears by eight hours of sleep each night. He's also a big proponent of waking up naturally, without an alarm. Arianna Huffington follows a similar routine. She told Oprah she too gets at least eight hours of sleep and wakes up on her own. 2. They exercise As the sun begins to rise, Dwayne The Rock Johnson kicks his day off with cardio either a run or a session on the elliptical. It energizes him for the rest of his day. Shark Tank star Daymond John also starts his day with a workout. He says this wasn't always his routine, but he finds it makes him more productive, which then shortens his work week. 3. They meditate Self-help guru Tony Robbins also exercises each morning, but after a protein-packed breakfast, he spends 10 minutes meditating, according to Business Insider. He calls the practice priming, which mixes yoga techniques with mindfulness. He says it gives him energy and sets his positive intentions for the day. Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn, once tweeted that he too meditates each morning. In fact, he wakes up at 5:30 each morning, reads his emails, checks the news, works out, meditates, and eats breakfast all before 9 a.m. 4. They eat breakfast Richard Branson starts his day with a game of tennis, a walk, run, or bike ride, and follows it with breakfast and time with his family. Related:9 Habits That Will Make You Happier in the Office 5. They soak up the silence Shonda Rhimes, the producer of Grey's Anatomy and creator of Scandal, told InStyle she wakes up an hour and a half before her kids, around 5:30 a.m. She writes in her journal or simply stares out her window. Then, the kids awake, and her day's off to the races. CEO and co-founder of Ellevest, Sallie Krawcheck, starts her day with silence as well. However, she fills the silence with work. She wrote in a LinkedIn article that she's her most productive self at 4 a.m. 6. They spend time with their pets Like others, Oprah starts her day with meditation and exercise. Yet, before that happens, she brushes her teeth and takes her five dogs outside. After walking around the yard with them, she settles in and makes a cup of her favorite espresso. Personal trainer Jillian Michaels says her alarm is her five year old. After the two cuddle, they feed their household of animals, reports Blinkist Magazine. This includes a rabbit, a pig, dogs, a bird, chickens, ducks, and fish. 7. They review their to-do lists Shark Tank stars Kevin O'Leary and Barbara Cochran start their days with to-do lists. Before O'Leary goes to bed, he writes down three tasks he wants to get done the next morning. Whatever it is, even if it's something as simple as sending a text, he completes those three tasks the following morning. He says it puts him on track for a productive day. Cochran follows a to-do list, too though it's more structured. She told Inc. that she files her tasks in order of importance, labeling them A, B, or C. She gives herself three to five A tasks a day. Because these are the most important, she makes sure to complete them in the morning, when she's most productive. 8. They check their emails Shark Tank star Mark Cuban spends an hour each morning checking his emails, he told Thrive Global. He says emailing allows him to set his own schedule because it alleviates the need for scheduled meetings and phone calls. Apple CEO Tim Cook probably wakes up before anyone else around 3:45 a.m. He receives 700 to 800 emails a day, and he reads nearly all of them. He uses his time in the morning to wade through them. Rather than checking emails, Mark Zuckerberg naturally checks Facebook. 9. They don't hit snooze Comedian Jerry Seinfeld doesn't hit snooze. Instead, he forces himself out of bed, opens the shades, turns on the radio, and splashes cold water on his face. Although he's known for getting coffee with other comedians these days, he spent much of his career functioning just fine without caffeine, he says in an interview. 10. They catch up on the news Warren Buffett is big on reading the news. He told CNBC he starts each day with the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Forbes, while Bill Gates told Fox Business his go-to sources are The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal as well. Martha Stewart seconds The New York Times. 11. They make their bed Tim Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week and Tools of Titans, makes his bed. In Tools of Titans, he explains that the routine task keeps his room and his head clear of distractions. It's also something he can control, so no matter how crazy his day might become, he knows his bed is made. 12. They think about improvement Venus Williams revealed to Fast Company that she wakes up and immediately thinks about her game. It's an addiction, but I always think about how to get better, she says. Everything is geared toward that. So rather than hitting snooze for 30 minutes tomorrow morning, try to set a better, more productive tone to your day. Get active, eat breakfast, and do what your parents always begged you to do: make your bed. Click on the following link for more advice on how to get ahead. How to Organize Your Desk at Work

How to Organize Your Desk at Work How to Organize Your Desk at Work Your office desk is often a reflection of your personality and habits. Some workspaces are sparse and orderly. Others are colorful and highly personalized. Then there are those cubicles that are so cluttered, you wonder how any work can get done there. Organize your desk? Bring in a forklift! Regardless of your preferences or inclinations, your workstation should be set up for the best time management, productivity and, yes, comfort. After all, whether you work in a cubicle or a private office, you may spend more time at your desk than you do in your own bed. If you’re frequently overwhelmed by disorderly files, stacks of paperwork and general disarray, what better time than now is there to do something about it. Here are eight suggestions for how to organize your desk: 1. Triage your stuff Your physical desktop is prime real estate, and you probably don’t need half the stuff that’s taking up valuable space. Here’s a method for culling your things: On Monday morning, remove nonessential items from your desktop and put them on the floor. As you get busy working, put back on your desk only what you need for completing each task. At the end of the week, find a new home for anything still on the floor - a drawer, supply closet or even the recycling bin. 2. Go with your workflow Many people have a left-to-right tendency. This means incoming items - telephone, inbox, computer, other devices - on the left, a clear workspace in the middle, and outgoing items such as staplers and completed paperwork on the right. The best way to organize your desk depends on how you operate. Experiment with various arrangements until you find one that feels natural and streamlined for you. Looking to start anew with a fresh workspace at a different company? See what positions we place at Robert Half. 3. Save the space When you need to sign or spread out paperwork but don’t have empty space, your stress level can increase. Designate a section of your desk as a no-parking zone, and get into the habit of not letting things sit there while you aren’t working on them. This clean-up tip may require you to think vertically, such as getting a wall shelf and using it to house non-essential files and other items. 4. Reduce visual clutter Even if the desktop itself is orderly, you may not be as efficient as you want to be if there are too many things competing for your attention. For example, some workers love sticky notes, putting them on their desks and around their computer monitors. One or two are fine. But when you have too many, they become a distraction and make it hard to concentrate on what’s truly important. 5. Add a personal touch Though clean, your workspace need not be sterile. Marie Kondo, author of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” is a fan of items that give people joy. Put a few meaningful objects - photos, cartoons, inspirational quotes or a favorite action figurine - on your wall, bulletin board or desktop. But keep them to a minimum, or else your desk will look too messy and possibly unprofessional. 6. Go digital Paper is still the biggest culprit of cluttered workspaces. If you haven’t done so already, migrate your calendar, to-do list and memo pad to your computer - and sync them with your smartphone for greater accessibility and utility. The beauty of digital productivity tools is that they come with notification options, so you can set up alerts for meetings, appointments and tasks. 7. Check under your desk Don’t underestimate the importance of leg room. All those cords and cables under your desk don’t just contribute to the mayhem - they’re also a safety hazard. Use Velcro wraps and cord tamers to prevent tangles and give your feet more wiggle room. And if you’re using the floor to store stacks of files, move them to a filing cabinet or, better yet, digitize them and shred the papers. 8. Wipe it down Keep a few supplies handy and get into the habit of giving your desk, keyboard, monitor and phone regular cleanings. Sitting down to a fresh-smelling, dust-free work area improves your mood and boosts your productivity. Why know how to organize your desk? An organized workspace is not a magical time saver, but it helps you get more done, because you know where everything is, aren’t overwhelmed by visual distraction and can focus on the task at hand. Plus, an organized desk helps create positive mental energy that can spread to your enthusiasm for your daily duties. Make your Small Company Culture a Stand Out to Job Candidates

Make your Small Company Culture a Stand Out to Job Candidates Make your Small Company Culture a Stand Out to Job Candidates Make your Small Company Culture a Stand Out to Job Candidates Herrenkohl Does size matter? When it comes to recruiting, a small company can actually be a big advantage. Use these recommendations to inform your recruitment process and attract A-players using your small-company culture. Attract top talent who prefer working for small companies. There are big company people and small company people your job is to find the ones that are naturally attracted to your environment. A sharp young woman recently told me that she and her friends made a pact after college that they would not sell out by working for big companies. Working for a big company can be terrific for the right person, but the fact is there are many people who prefer a smaller work environment. Actively promote the fact that you are a small company that does big-time projects, or something similar. Dont try to hide the fact that you are small (it wont work anyway.) Instead, emphasize to candidates the clients whom you serve and the quality of the work that you do. Let your company culture come through in your job postings. Typically, small companies have a more laid-back, less corporate work environment. If that is true for you, let that un-corporate attitude come through in your job postings as part of your recruiting strategy. For example, a client of mine in the kitchen and bath industry posted a job opening for a designer. In the ad, they described themselves as a company that designed award-winning, high-end kitchens and baths while not taking ourselves too seriously. Then, they described their ideal candidate as follows: You know how to design kitchens and baths and are darn good at it. You can sell what you design (that seems obvious but you would be surprised.) You like people and they like you. You are a good problem solver and you can prove it. You care about where you work and the people you work with. This is a great job description because it clearly describes the profile of this companys ideal candidate and does it in a non-reverent tone that captures their culture. You should strive for an appropriate tone in your postings on Monster. Be clear about what you want in job applicants while using the tone of your posting to attract people who will do well in your environment and culture. Use the interview process to play up your work environment. I once referred a young salesperson to a client of mine as a job applicant. The salesperson worked for a big company. The President of the client company, a smaller franchisor, set up the interview himself. He arranged to meet the salesperson at a local coffee shop, and told him that he would be the guy wearing shorts and riding a Harley. You can imagine how much that appealed to this 25-year-old. Here he was stuck working in a corporate bureaucracy while other people were running companies and riding their motorcycle to work. It was a powerful, non-verbal way for my client to communicate the advantages of his small-company culture. This doesnt mean you have to head to your local motorcycle dealership (unless you want to). Use your own authentic, distinctive characteristics to appeal to applicants. Let them experience you and your company, and see who responds to your culture. The people who respond positively are likely the ones who will fit your company best. Provide flexibility. The world is filled with people who are looking for flexible work arrangements. There are seasoned A-players in all professions salespeople, attorneys, CPAs, and consultants just to mention a few who would do anything for a job that lets them use their skills and still have a life outside of work. Design a role for these people, let everyone in your network know about it, and see if you get any A-player referrals. Remember that time and flexibility can be more important to people than working for a big company. If you design and promote different roles with this in mind, you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of people you can attract. Pay and benefits. If you want to compete for A-player talent when making a job offer, you have to offer competitive pay and benefits. However, there is a difference between being in the ballpark and matching the benefits of the Fortune 500. Put the best plan that you can afford in place for compensation, health insurance, retirement, vacation, and associated areas. If a job candidate puts together a spreadsheet to compare your dental coverage to that of a Fortune 500 company, you likely wont be able to beat them. How to Get Paid in the Music Business

How to Get Paid in the Music Business How to Get Paid in the Music Business Making money in the music industry isnt always as simple as negotiating a salary and waiting for your paycheck to come in. The pay structure of many music industry jobs is based on percentages for one-off deals and freelance-style work, but different music industry careers are paid in different ways. For this reason, the music career you choose will have a big impact on how you make money in the music business. Here, youll find a look at how several common music industry jobs are paid- but remember, as always, that this information is general, and the deal you agree to will dictate your circumstances. Managers: Managers receive an agreed-upon percentage of the income from the artists they work with. Sometimes, musicians may pay managers a salary as well; this often works like a retainer, ensuring that the manager doesnt work with any other bands. However, this latter scenario really only comes into play when the artists are making a sufficient enough income to support themselves comfortably and legitimately have a need to make sure their manager focuses only on them.  Career Profile: ManagersManager Contracts Music Promoters: Promoters make money on ticket sales for the gigs they promote. There are two ways this can happen:The promoter takes a percentage of the proceeds from the show after recouping their costs, giving the remaining money to the artists. This is known as a door split deal. The promoter may agree on a fixed payment with the musicians for their performance, and then any money left after costs is theirs to keep.Career Profile: Music PromoterPromotion ContractsConcert Promotion CostsMusic Agents: Agents take an agreed-upon percentage of the fees for the shows they arrange for musicians. In other words, an agent who negotiates a fee for a band to be paid $500 for a show takes a cut of that $500.  Career Profile: Music AgentsHow to Book a Gig Record Labels: At a very basic level, record labels make money by selling records. Your job at the record label and what type of label you work for will determine what this means for you. If you have your own record label, then you make money by selling enough records to cover your costs and make a profit. If you work for someone elses record label, you will likely get a salary or hourly wage. The size of the label and your role there determines how big that salary/wage will be.Before You Start a Record LabelIndie Label Contracts Music PR: Whether radio plugging or conducting press campaigns, music PR companies  are paid on a campaign basis. They negotiate a flat fee for working a release or tour, and that fee usually covers a set amount of time for the company to promote the product/tour. Music PR companies may also get bonuses for successful campaigns and reaching certain thresholds- for instance, a bonus if the album sells a certain number of copies. These agreements are made before the campaign begins.  Music PRCareer Profile: Radio Plugger Music Journalists: Music journalists who work freelance are paid on a per project or contract basis. If they work for a specific publication, they likely receive a salary or hourly wage.  Career Profile: Music JournalistMusic Producers: Record producers may receive a salary if they are tied to a specific studio or be paid on a per-project basis if they freelance. Another important part of music producer pay can be points, which allow producers to share in the royalties from the music they produce. Not all producers get points on every project.Career Profile: Record ProducerProducer Points Sound Engineers: Sound engineers who work independently get paid on a per-project basis- which can be a one-night deal or they may go on the road and do sound for a whole tour, in which case they will be paid for the tour and may also receive per diems (P.D.s). Engineers who work with a particular venue exclusively are likely to receive an hourly wage.  Interview: Sound Engineer Simon KasprowiczMusicians: What about the musicians themselves? Musicians make money from royalties, advances, playing live, selling merchandise, and licensing fees for their music. Sounds like a lot of revenue streams, but dont forget they often have to share the money with the people listed above.  Mechanical RoyaltiesPerformance Rights Royalties There are lots of different ways to make money in the music business, and many of them come down to percentages and contracts. For this reason, everyone needs to be on the same page about how payments will take place. Also, you should always get it in writing.
